KILLER Brian Meehan is the latest high-profile prisoner to find out he won’t be allowed any Christmas leave from prison this year.

Now one of the longest serving prisoners in the State, the former Gilligan gang member is the only person ever convicted for the 1996 murder of journalist Veronica Guerin.

Earlier this year he had been moved to an open prison Shelton Abbey in Wicklow raising the possibility he could soon start enjoying temporary release.

However, his application for a three-day release for Christmas has been turned down according to sources.

Meehan has been in custody in Ireland since his 1998 extradition from The Netherlands after a 10-month legal battle and convicted of murder the following year.

Ms Guerin had been shot dead in her car as it stopped at traffic lights by a gunman on the back of a motor bike.

Meehan drove the bike while Patrick “Dutchy” Holland is believed to have been the gunman who shot the journalist at Newlands Cross.

He served the bulk of his time in the high-security Portlaoise Prison before being moved to Wheatfield Prison two years ago.

Another killer, Joe O’Reilly, also had his application for release over the festive period denied by prison authorities.

The Sunday World revealed earlier this week that O’Reilly who is serving life for the murder of his wife Rachel Callaly, made an application this year.

Rachel’s father Jim said that O’Reilly has never shown remorse and was glad his application had been turned down.

The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted the usual release of prisoners for Christmas amid fears returning inmates could spread the virus.
