Sophie Toscan du Plantier’s family pin hopes on new investigation

  22nd December 2021

Sophie Toscan du Plantier’s uncle has said he is hopeful a new Garda investigation will lead to charges in connection with her murder.

It comes almost 25 years on from the unsolved killing of Ms Toscan du Plantier, 39, a French television producer who was beaten to death with a rock and a concrete block outside her holiday home in Schull, Co Cork, on the night of December 23, 1996.

Jean-Pierre Gazeau, Ms Toscan du Plantier’s uncle, told Newstalk: ‘There is a new investigation from gardaí… We hope there will be some outcome from this new investigation. We hope strongly the new DPP [Director of Public Prosecutions] will have new considerations about the case.’Sophie Toscan du Plantier’s uncle has said he is hopeful a new Garda investigation will lead to charges in connection with her murder. Former journalist Ian Bailey, 64, was twice arrested in connection with Ms Toscan du Plantier’s death, but no one has been charged with her murder in Ireland.

Mr Bailey was convicted of murder in abstenia in a Paris court in 2019, but the Irish courts refused a third attempt by France to extradite him last year.

Mr Gazeau said it is a ‘pity’ Ireland has rejected the extradition of Mr Bailey, as it could lead to a new trial in which he would be able to give his defence and have his own legal team. Mr Bailey has previously said he has no intention of going to France, as he doesn’t believe he will be given a fair trial and has repeatedly claimed that he is innocent.
