Ian Bailey describes himself as a victim on Sophie’s 25th anniversary

 23rd December 2021

Ian Bailey has described himself as a victim on the 25th anniversary of Sophie Toscan du Plantier’s murder.

The French filmmaker was 39-years-old when she was brutally murdered at her holiday home in west Cork on December 23 1996. Her unsolved murder, in which Bailey is the self-confessed chief subject, has been the subject of international attention over the past 25 years.

‘I genuinely feel sorry for her’, Mr Bailey told the Irish Mirror. ‘She lost her life, and the killer is on the loose’.a man wearing a hat: Ian Bailey has described himself as a victim on the 25th anniversary of Sophie Toscan du Plantier’s murder. ‘But there are secondary victims. Me, my family, Sophie’s family – especially her son – and the people of Schull’, he continued. ‘The murder has had a terrible impact on all of us and nobody can rest until it is solved’.

Mr Bailey once again protested his innocence, saying ‘I didn’t kill Sophie Toscan du Plantier. I never knew her, was never introduced to her. It’s a false narrative perpetrated by certain people since the day she died’.

Mr Bailey was trialed by a French court for Sophie’s murder in absentia, where he was found guilty and sentenced to 25 years in prison. However, most of the evidence against Bailey is based on hearsay, and wouldn’t be allowed in an Irish court.Death of Sophie Toscan du Plantier smiling for the camera: The 25th anniversary of Sophie’s brutal murder was on Thursday. Mr Bailey was arrested twice in connection with Sophie’s murder, however he was never charged by the DPP.

Mr Bailey has described how he has lived every day for the past 25 years with ‘a false accusation’ over his head, saying ‘I am no longer bitter or angry, I just get up every day determined to clear my name and prove my innocence’.

‘Many support me, while others hate me. The vast majority of people have been very kind’, he continued. ‘Then there are others who want to kill me, issue death threats, beat me up. It’s something I just live with’.Ian Bailey in a blue shirt: Mr Bailey says that he has lived every day for the past 25 years with the ‘false accusation’ of murdering Sophie 25 years ago over his head. Mr Bailey claims on the night of Sophie’s murder he went for drinks with his then-partner Jules Thomas in two local pubs, before heading home at midnight. He insists that he didn’t leave Ms Thomas’ house until the next morning, before going to the scene of Sophie’s murder as a journalist.

Meanwhile, Sophie’s uncle has said that he’s hopeful that a new Garda investigation will lead to someone being charged in connection with her murder.
