British army unit was ‘given licence to kill IRA snipers’

The Government monitored claims that a special undercover British army unit was operating along the Border under the direction of MI5 in a bid to hunt down IRA sniper teams.

The revelation came in secret files released as part of the State Papers.

Seven years’ worth of archive material was released in relation to Anglo-Irish contacts on Northern Ireland.

While the releases underlined the warming relationship between Dublin and London as well as enhanced security cooperation, Government officials were deeply concerned at the surge in deadly paramilitary violence in Northern Ireland between 1990 and 1993.

The IRA had also launched a devastating bombing campaign across England, which included the Warrington atrocity.

Confidential files revealed the Government was carefully monitoring reports of British military units operating along the Border and any incidents of incursions into the Republic.

One dossier revealed the British authorities were desperate to deal with IRA snipers who were using a devastating American-built rifle that fired a .50 calibre or 12.7mm round.

The 13.5kg Barrett Light Fifty M82 rifle was designed to attack military equipment such as lightly armoured vehicles as well as radio and radar installations.

But it was a ferocious weapon when used against human targets.

The 120cm-long rifle was deadly from a range of almost 1,800 metres and the heavy round it fired was so destructive that even a leg or arm wound could prove fatal.

In April 1993, a government file revealed reports were being monitored of a special British military unit, under the direction of MI5, being set up to target the IRA snipers.

It was believed there were up to four IRA snipers operating along the Border and that the IRA had a total of three Barrett Light Fifty rifles smuggled in from the US.

One British newspaper claimed the British military unit had been issued with “a licence to kill”.

Between 1992 and 1997, six British army soldiers and RUC constables were killed by the IRA sniper teams using the heavy rifle.
