Gardaí found Maura Bergin Sr dead in her house at First Avenue, off Seville Place, Dublin 1.

Ms Bergin, née McCabe, was originally from Shercock in Cavan and had lived in Dublin for at least 35 years.

Media reports said she was in her 80s, but close neighbours said she was likely in her late 70s.The woman who was arrested is in her 40s and was said by neighbours to be in a distressed state after she left a house early on Wednesday. Her husband, Liam Bergin, is believed to be in hospital.

He is a retired digger-driver, originally from Kilkenny.

A neighbour, Máire Donohoe, who is also originally from Cavan, worked with Ms Bergin for 11-and-a-half years at the Sheriff Street post office and said she was one of her closest friends.Gardaí found Maura Bergin Sr dead in her house at First Avenue, off Seville Place, Dublin 1. A neighbour who was with Ms Donohoe said the Bergins were ‘the nicest people you could ever meet’ and that the whole area was deeply upset. Ms Bergin’s body was found by gardaí in a downstairs room just before midday yesterday and a murder inquiry has begun.

The coroner has been notified and a post-mortem was being carried out on Wednesday.

The arrested woman was last night being held at Store Street Garda Station on suspicion of murder.Ms Bergin, née McCabe, was originally from Shercock in Cavan and had lived in Dublin for at least 35 years. Gardaí appealed for any witnesses or anyone with information to contact Store Street on 01 666 8089, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

They say they are following ‘a definite line of inquiry’ and are not looking for anyone else at present.
