A man has been accused of possession of child pornographic videos and images at his Dublin home.

Thiago Alves (33) had the case against him adjourned for the directions of the DPP when he appeared in Dublin District Court.

Mr Alves, a Brazilian national with an address at Cabra Park, Cabra, is charged with knowingly having eight videos and 14 images depicting children in various sexual acts, poses and scenarios.

The arresting garda told Judge Bryan Smyth the accused made no reply when charged and cautioned. Mr Alves was handed copies of the charge sheets, he said. There was no garda objection to bail, but he sought a €750 cash lodgement due to the severity of the alleged offences.

Judge Smyth granted bail on condition the accused signs on three times per week at a garda station, lives at his home address, remains in the jurisdiction and surrenders his passport and national identity card. He is not to apply for any other travel documents.

Mr Alves was also to provide a phone number to gardaí at which he is contactable at all times. Defence solicitor Tony Collier said the accused’s phones had been seized by gardaí and he undertook to obtain another number for gardaí.

Mr Collier asked the judge not to ask for cash bail, saying Mr Alves had been in Ireland for nine years, was working full time and well-established.

He appreciated the charge was serious but said the accused had strict bail conditions and could be monitored by the gardaí.

Judge Smyth said he would not require cash and instead set bail in Mr Alves own bond on €1,000 with no lodgement

The garda said time was needed for a technical examination and completion of the investigation file.

The judge adjourned the case to a date in July, for the directions of the DPP. The charge is under to Section 6(1) of the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act, 1998.
