‘I did not commit any crime’ — Leo Varadkar speaks out on leak inquiry

Leo Varadkar has insisted he did not commit a crime regarding the sharing of a confidential Government document to a friend.

The Tánaiste spoke publicly for the first time since it was confirmed that gardaí submitted a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on the incident.

Leo said: ‘I am very pleased that the garda investigation is now over, it was a very long and thorough one and at the end it, there was no recommendation that there should be any charges.’

Mr Varadkar told Californian reporters that the matter was now with the DPP, and a decision is awaited.

The Fine Gael leader claimed that the allegations made against him ‘were false’ and ‘politically motivated.’

‘I did not commit any crime, I did not do anything corrupt, in fact, I did not do anything self-interested and when this is over I think that will be clear to any reasonable person,’ he stated.

The Tánaiste stated that the case is now with the DPP, and they will decide if he has a case.

He added that he did ‘not want to say anything that could be interpreted as me putting pressure on the DPP in any way.’

The Dáil were previously told by the Tánaiste that he gave a copy of an agreement between the State and the Irish Medical Organisation to Maitiú Ó Túathail in 2019.

At the time, Ó Túathail was the president of the National Association of General Practitioners, a rival GP organisation.

Last week Gardaí confirmed that ‘an investigation file on this matter has been submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution for its consideration.’
