Now fraudsters sending taxi drivers to get bank cards as AIB issue warning

30th April 2022

AIB has warned that fraudsters are sending unsuspecting taxi drivers to collect customers’ bank cards as part of an elaborate new hoax.

The bank sent an email on Friday afternoon with the subject ‘avoid putting your bank card in a taxi’.

AIB stated that some customers had been contacted by fraudsters who claimed that there had been an issue with their card and that the bank needed it back.

‘We’ve heard about cases where a fraudster, pretending to be from AIB, calls or texts you to tell you your card details are already in the wrong hands of criminals and we have arranged for a taxi to collect your card from you,’ it said.

‘A genuine taxi arrives, collects the card and innocently delivers it into the hands of a real criminal. They now have access to the money in your account.’

AIB added that while the bank may ring customers if there is suspicious activity on accounts, it would not ask customers for their card back, nor would it send a taxi driver to collect it.

‘If you get a call about suspicious activity on your card and the call sounds strange in any way, just hang up,’ it said. ‘You can also freeze your card or cancel it online.’

An AIB spokesperson could not provide data on how many people had been targeted by the scam. The Garda Press Office told Extra.ie that it was aware of similar scams but also did not have data on how many cases have been reported.

The National Transport Authority issued a statement last month stating that one of the ‘major banks’ had thanked taxi drivers who are ‘defeating fraudsters and scammers through their own diligence’.

‘Some taxi drivers have refused to take the envelope from the cardholder, whilst others have refused to hand it over to the alleged branch employee, rather giving it to a confirmed branch official inside the bank,’ it said
