A man aged in his late 20s was arrested at the scene and is currently in custody in relation to the fatal assault.

Sources said that the suspect and victim are known to each other and that at this stage gardaí are investigating if the deceased was stabbed to death after a row that “got out of hand”.

Gardaí are currently attempting to establish the exact circumstances that led to the fatal assault.

A Garda spokeswoman said that the scene is currently preserved to facilitate a technical examination by forensic officers.

The Office of the State Pathologist has also been notified for the purposes of a post-mortem examination being carried out.

The suspect remains in custody at Kilkenny garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

He can be detained for a period of up to 24 hours before he must either be charged or released from custody pending a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)

Local gardaí are continuing to appeal for any witnesses, or anyone with information in relation to the fatal stabbing, to contact them.

“Any person who was on Hebron Road this afternoon between 12.30pm and 1.00pm, including any road users who may have camera footage, including dash cam, is asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí” a spokeswoman said.

“Any person with any information which may be relevant to the Garda investigation should contact Kilkenny Garda Station on 056 777 5000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station,” she added.
