A teenager found with €300 worth of cannabis concealed in his underwear was “the custodian” of the drugs for his friends, a court has heard.

Jack Brady (19) pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis and having cannabis for sale or supply.

Balbriggan District Court heard Brady, with an address at Craoibhin Park, Balbriggan, was one of a number of youths in a car stopped by gardaí at 1am on September 18th last.

There was a strong smell of cannabis from the accused and his associates, the court presenter said.

Brady was arrested and conveyed to Balbriggan Garda Station where a search was carried out and five bags of cannabis of different weights and sizes were found concealed in his underwear. The total value of the cannabis was €300.

Defence solicitor Fiona D’Arcy said the defendant was someone who unfortunately struggles with drug use.

She said in terms of the drugs found on the night, they had been bought by Brady and his friends but he was “the custodian” of them.

The teenager is someone who suffers from anxiety and although he is making efforts to deal with his drug problem, he isn’t completely off it she added.

Judge Dermot Dempsey said the matter was something which would be suitable for the Drug Treatment Court. He remanded Brady on bail to appear before the drugs court at Green Street on May 4.
