Huge increase in non-Ukrainian asylum applications as word gets out that Ireland is a soft touch

One might have imagined that with the huge challenges facing the state in meeting the demands of providing homes for refugees from the war in Ukraine that the authorities might have seized the opportunity to attempt to tackle what is clearly a dysfunctional system.

To give some idea of the scale of what’s happening, there have been 3,343 applications for asylum to the end of April in this country – already more than the annual total of 2,649 in 2021. These are not applications from Ukrainians as that need has been waived for anyone fleeing that war – these applications are very often from people travelling from countries considered safe, like Georgia.

The problems we now face around accommodation, social welfare, school places, medical cards and so on for refugees from an actual war has illustrated that the system in Ireland as it stands is bogged down in providing places to stay for those claiming to be fleeing other unsafe countries.

The state’s own statistics have shown the huge proportion of these who are found initially to be claiming asylum on false pretences.

That scenario is only going to get worse as the state for some bizarre reason has decided to amnesty illegal immigrants who ought not to be here in the first place. It is also fast-tracking migrants claiming asylum into public housing and even the acquisition of driving licenses.

The odds against any bogus asylum seeker, or even a convicted criminal who has been “requested” to leave the jurisdiction, being deported is about high as my temporarily three legged Yorkshire Terrier winning the Greyhound Derby.

If the state is serious about ensuring that genuine refugees from Ukraine and other actual places of danger are looked after, then surely they ought to be discouraging the high number of opportunistic applicants. This would be achieved by speeding up the process and sending them home rather than allowing them to stay here for years as appeals are heard or as they disappear into the underground to be amnestied and guaranteed a lifetime on the taxpayer’s tab.

The statistics to date for the numbers arriving here to apply for international protection indicate that far from this problem diminishing it is already increasing. The year on year figures from the International Protection Office show that in January alone the numbers were almost three times as high as in January 2021.

According to an article in the Sunday Business Post yesterday there have been 3,343 applications to the end of April. That compares to annual totals for 2021 of 2,649 and 1,566 for 2020. The leading source countries for applications remain, as has been the case in other years, states which are mostly not considered to be “unsafe” for the purposes of international protection.

These include Nigeria, South Africa, Albania, Georgia and Brazil. There are no generally valid reasons why anyone from these countries should be seeking asylum anywhere and indeed there have been previous attempts by the state to stop people from Albania and Georgia in particular. The crackdown on such was obviously successful in 2021 as “asylum seekers” from either barely registered statistically, but in January this year they accounted for 20% of the total.

Why are they not still being turned back? It is surely not rocket science. Put them back on the plane. The same applies to people arriving here from African countries which are recognised as safe and democratic and indeed in the case of South Africa if you were to question anything about that country you would be lit on by the very same people who make heroes and give jobs to people who appear to be claiming asylum on the most spurious grounds.

The work permits system provides plenty of scope for persons from those countries to come here legitimately to seek work. And yet we had an example last year of a truck driver from South Africa who claimed asylum here and then brought a case over not being allowed transfer his license so that he could work.

The asylum industry is having a heyday in the current circumstances. They clearly believe that the influx of war refugees from Ukraine is just another means to push the door open further. Not for people genuinely fleeing from danger but anyone who can manage to transit through other safe countries in order to avail of the ersatz generosity of a state that is prepared to throw the resources of its own citizens at anyone who manages to arrive here and lawyer up with the NGO/legal racket.

Well, someday perhaps enough people will realise that there are some circles that cannot be squared. You cannot provide protection for genuine refugees and house an expanding population while constantly demanding that opportunists are given equal entitlement. And you cannot keep pretending that the current problems in housing, health, education and other areas can be solved while creating huge increase in demand in a system desperately short of supply.
