Suspect in Dublin pub firebomb arrested by heavily-armed gardaí

Heavily-armed gardaí were involved in an arrest operation this morning in which a man who is suspected of firebombing a south Dublin pub with patrons inside it earlier this month was arrested.

The suspect, who is well known to gardaí, is currently being detained in Shankill Garda Station.

Members of the Armed Support Unit (ASU) were involved in the arrest of the suspect who is aged in his 20s. He was arrested in the Ballybrack area

The shocking firebomb incident took place in the Lough Inn Pub, in Loughlinstown, in the early hours of Saturday, June 18, with a large group of customers, including a hen party, inside.

Nobody was injured in the incident but fire damage was caused to the pub. A video of the aftermath of the incident was circulated on social media.

It is understood that a man walked into the pub and threw the petrol bomb in the vicinity of the bar before fleeing.

The suspect was identified by officers within hours.

“Gardaí have arrested a male, aged in his 20s, in relation to an incident of criminal damage at a licensed premises on Loughlinstown Drive in Loughlinstown, Co. Dublin on Saturday, 18th June 2022,” a garda spokeswoman told today.

“He is currently detained in Shankill garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

“Investigations are ongoing,” she added.

A DJ playing at the pub posted on social media about the incident, saying: “Gigging away, happy in Loughlinstown, a big hen night on. Some guy runs in and throws a petrol bomb at the bar. Place was in flames, smoke and screams. Barman got it out eventually with a fire extinguisher. Pub was full of people.”

A Garda spokesperson said at the time: “Shortly after midnight on Saturday, a petrol bomb was thrown inside the premises causing damage to the interior of the property. The suspected offender immediately fled the scene.”

Officers later appealed for information about the incident which is classified as criminal damage by fire.

A security source told that it was “miraculous” no one was injured in the “reckless and indiscriminate attack”.
