THE Kinahan cartel hitman convicted of the murder of Real IRA member Michael Barr was once part of the mob run by crime boss Martin ‘Marlo’ Hyland.

The Irish Sun can reveal that contract killer Christopher Slator, 37, was a young member of Hyland and Eamon ‘The Don’ Dunne’s ruthless gang before later joining the Kinahan Organised Crime Group.

But Slator’s involvement with Daniel Kinahan’s narco-terrorist mob is over after he was caged for life yesterday at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin.

The gun for hire, from Carnlough Road in Cabra, north Dublin, was convicted after his DNA was recovered from a mask and a runner found in the getaway car used by the three-man hit team that killed Barr.

Investigators believe he acted as the getaway driver as his associates Eamon Cumberton, 36, and David Hunter, 43, from London, stormed into the Sunset House Pub in north inner city Dublin on April 25, 2016 and shot Barr in front of stunned punters.

Cartel fixer Martin Aylmer was also convicted for supplying phones to the hit team.

Barr was targeted by the cartel’s killers after he was wrongly identified as one of the gunmen in the 2016 Regency Hotel attack.

Slator — one of seven cartel killers now serving life for murder — was recruited to the gang because of his friendship with Cumberton.

One source said: “Slator is one of many individuals from north Dublin who were recruited by the cartel for the sole purpose of killing people.

“Cumberton was the driving force behind this hit team and Slator played an important role in this killing machine.

“The suspicion is that Slator was the getaway driver because Hunter wouldn’t have known Dublin that well and [Slator] took orders from Cumberton who was the lead gunman.

“He was simply expendable to the cartel and that’s why he’s the one now serving a life sentence.”

Following yesterday’s conviction, Barr’s heartbroken sister Noleen said: “Another one bites the dust. Christopher Slator guilty for the murder of my brother.”

During his trial, the court heard how Slator had thrown his runners and mask into the getaway car as it was torched.

But DNA was found on the items — and a Makarov handgun retrieved — after Det Garda Michael Harkin extinguished the blaze in the gang’s Audi A6 on Walsh Road, Drumcondra.

During yesterday’s hearing at the Special Criminal Court, Ms Justice Tara Burns ruled Slator was in the getaway car on the night of the murder and participated in the plot to kill Barr.

The judge said no “rational explanation” exists to point to his innocence.
