VICTIMS of Catriona Carey have blasted the convicted fraudster for referring to herself as a “fall guy”, last night declaring: “She’s a manipulative con artist.”

The former Irish hockey star and sister of Kilkenny hurling legend DJ Carey is accused of scamming up to 30 people out of approximately €400,000 after offering to buy debt from their mortgage lenders at a discount.

An investigation by RTE’s Prime Time earlier this year revealed how more than €200,000 deposited by desperate homeowners into a business account controlled by Carey was allegedly spent on personal items and services — including trips abroad and a plush €55,000 BMW.

Carey’s the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau involving complaints of fraud against her from more than 20 former clients.

But in an interview with the Sunday World she claimed to be a “fall guy” who has been conned by a ringleader in the scam.

Retailer Colin Finnegan, 53, who lost a €15,000 deposit to the scammer, blasted Carey’s claims.

The Co Louth man said: “I wouldn’t believe a single word that came out of this parasite’s mouth — she preyed on innocent people.

“She told lie after lie after lie and this is all about self preservation.

“Carey was the driving force behind the scam and we had nothing but lies from day one.

“Her statement just doesn’t add up because why did she spend the deposits on cars and holidays when it wasn’t her money to spend? So many people have been affected by this scam and I don’t know if we will ever get our money back.”

Businessman Colin added: “She knows she’s in trouble and that why she’s determined to pull a few others down with her.

“Others who were involved in her scam are now turning against each other and we deserve justice.”

And Andrew Hickey, who also lost €15,000 to schemer Carey told how victims were “furious and disgusted” at her claims.

The firefighter, who represents a group of 19 people who have lost thousands to Carey, said: “We are all disgusted and furious at these deplorable claims by Catriona Carey.

‘LYING THROUGH HER TEETH’

“Once again she is lying through her teeth — it’s her speciality. The rats are jumping ship now and she’s out to save herself.

“She was involved in this scam four years ago and when she met people two years ago she failed to mention that not one person had received their contract.

“This isn’t just about money — she has destroyed so many lives.”

He added: “We know the Gardai have a job to do but when are we going to see justice? She has attempted to portray herself as a victim but she is one of the masterminds.

“She has no morals whatsoever and her statement is simply an attempt to protect herself — it’s disgusting.”

And a Co Kildare businessman, who lost €60,000 in the scam, also told The Irish Sun: “I don’t believe a word this woman says — there is no way she didn’t know this was a scam.

‘ALL A LIE’

“She told me the contract was no big deal, that she did it for loads of people and was guaranteeing me my deposit but it was all a lie.”

Shameless Carey yesterday claimed in a brazen interview that the €400,000 in client funds once held by her company Careysfort Asset Estates are now “gone and not recoverable”.

The 44-year-old said she believed the associate she calls the “ringleader” was buying her clients’ debts from the banks and that the contracts “were good”.

The person, who is not related to Carey, raised an extra €400,000 in cash payments — bringing the total amount involved to €800,000.

She claimed she believed “we had enough money to refund everybody if everything had gone wrong”.

‘NOTHING TO HIDE’

But Carey also said she is “happy” to be under Garda investigation and has “nothing to hide”.

She said: “I’m sorry for the role I’ve played in this but I need (the clients) to understand I was being deceived also. The person behind all this has been given a free role to live their life and they have not been exposed the way I have been.”

She added: “I had no reason to set up this business up to destroy people’s lives. None whatsoever.

“Hopefully everybody that was involved in this pays the price — including myself. If I deserve to pay a penalty for this, I will absolutely take that on the chin.

“I came into this with the best of intentions, to make some money and to solve my own debt issues, solve other peoples debt issues. We were going to have a great future.”

In 2020, Carey was convicted of fraud and theft.

She had forged a cheque to make it payable to her, rather than the payee intended by the business that hired her as an accountant.
