17th August 2022
A29-year-old man has been granted bail after being charged in relation to a seizure of more than €100,000 of the ecstasy drug MDMA.
Jose dos Santos, with an address at Clonshaugh Heights in Priorswood, Dublin 17, appeared at a sitting of Dublin District Court in the Criminal Courts of Justice this morning.
The accused was arrested on Monday as part of a joint intelligence led operation conducted by the Revenue Commissioners Customs Service, the Garda National Drugs & Organised Crime Bureau and the Store Street Garda Drugs Unit as part of ongoing investigations targeting organised crime groups operating in Dublin City,
The operation resulted in the search of a premises in the Dublin 1 area during which approximately 1.898 Kgs MDMA Block and MDMA Tablets with an estimated value of €113,891 was seized by Customs officers.
Garda Brian Kenny today told Judge John Brennan that Mr dos Santos made no reply when charged with possession of drugs and possession of drugs with intent to supply others under Section 3 and Section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act.
Garda Kenny said he would not object to a bail application but would be seeking a large cash bond of €10,000 as well as conditions that the accused would reside at his address, not change his address, sign on daily at Coolock Garda Station, stay away from the Dublin 1 area, provide a phone number to gardai on which he could be contacted, and not leave the country.
Solicitor Donal Quigley, for the accused, said his client would abide by the bail conditions but said his client was not in a position to come up with the €10,000 cash bond.
He said his client was a fast food delivery driver who earns €2,000 a month and pays half of it in rent.
Judge Brennan allowed a €500 cash bond and remanded the accused in custody with consent to bail to appear in court again on August 23 for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
He also granted legal aid in the case.
