FIANNA FAIL minister Robert Troy has apologised for serious ‘mistakes’ he made in his declarations of interests regarding property he owned.

Earlier this week, the junior minister came under fire for failing to declare three different properties he sold to local authorities in his constituency.

By law, all TDs are obliged to record their business interests including property holdings, in the Register of Members Interests.

In a statement today he confirmed he has now submitted seven amendments to the Register to correct inaccuracies.

He said he had been under the “mistaken impression” that only property in his possession on 31 December of any year needed to be registered and not properties sold during that year.

He said: “I take my role and responsibility as a TD for Longford-Westmeath and Minister of State very seriously and I fully appreciate the seriousness of my mistake.

“I sincerely regret that my omissions and errors could be seen as my deflection or disregard of my responsibilities as public representative.

“I take full responsibility and I apologise unreservedly to my constituents, colleagues in Government, to the Dáil, and to SIPO for these errors and omissions.”

The changes he made to the Register include that he has now rented out his former home since November 2021.

He also included the sale of a home, Oak Crest, in Mullingar back in 2020, which he had ‘omitted by error’ because it was registered in 2019.

He also included the sale of a home, Ashfield, also in Mullingar in 2018, which he says was ‘recorded in all previous years.’

He further amended his returns to show him being a director of RMT Management Ltd in 2021. He said that this had not previously been recorded because he had been “unaware the process was not formally completed until 2021, hence my error”.

Meanwhile, he has now correctly included all properties he had owned from 2011 to 2021 under land and occupation’, including the sale of another home, Ashlawn, in Longford, which was bought and sold in 2019, making a profit of €81,000.

The Minister went on to share information ‘which does not have to be declared’ including the fact that a property he co-owns at 39 Cathedral View in Mullingar does not have his name on the ownership folio.

He also admitted to having two rental accommodation scheme contracts with Westmeath County Council, and that his wife was once a secretary at his management company. He also registered an inter-parliamentary trip to Taiwan in 2013.

After it was alleged he insisted that rent be paid to him in cash, Minister Troy denied the allegation and said that Westmeath County Council paid rent to him through an e-transfer.

He also insisted he was fully tax compliant as a landlord and as a public representative.

Earlier this week, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar described Troy as “top class” amid the controversy over his failure to declare his property ownership.

The Fine Gael leader said: “I’ve seen the work that he’s done, as a minister of state in my department over the past two years and it really has been top Class
