A POSTMAN stole packages that he was trusted to deliver, it has been alleged.

Dean O’Reilly (50) appeared in court accused of taking a TV, scooter and runners in three incidents.

The case against him was adjourned at Blanchardstown District Court for the accused to decide on a plea.

Mr O’Reilly, of Castlemoyne, Balgriffin, Dublin 13, is charged with theft.

The offences are alleged to have happened at An Post Delivery Services, Merrywell Industrial Estate, Ballymount Road Lower, on November 11, 17 and 30, 2020.

Garda Sergeant Maria Callaghan said the Director of Public Prosecutions had consented to the case being dealt with at district court level subject to the issue of jurisdiction being considered.

Outlining the prosecution’s case, she said gardaí received a complaint in relation to the alleged offences. According to the prosecution, Mr O’Reilly was a postal worker when he took packages “which were entrusted to him to deliver”.

This happened three times, it was alleged, and the items in question were a TV, a scooter and a pair of runners.

The total value of goods allegedly taken was €776, Sgt Callaghan said.

“We will deal with it here,” Judge Gerard Jones said, accepting jurisdiction.

He granted free legal aid following an application by defence barrister Ciaran MacLoughlin, who said Mr O’Reilly was no longer working for the postal service.
