THREE people have been arrested by gardai investigating a fatal house fire in which a dad and his five-year-old daughter died ten years ago.

Anthony O’Brien, 29, and his daughter Nadine died in a fire at their home at Killeen Heights, Oakpark, Tralee, Co Kerry, on May 12, 2012.

Mr O’Brien’s partner Kelly O’Brien, 28, escaped through an upstairs back window but suffered a broken leg from the first floor fall to the ground.

Her husband had helped lower her to safety.

He then returned to try to save his child but was overcome by the smoke.

Gardai tried to enter the house but were beaten back by the blaze.

Firefighters who entered the inferno using breathing apparatus found both of them together but they were unconscious.

Desperate attempts to resuscitate them failed and they were pronounced dead.

The alarm was raised by neighbours who heard screaming and the emergency services arrived at the scene around 2.30am.

The brave dad and the daughter who adored him were buried together in a single coffin so she “could be forever in his arms”.

The family had moved into the semi-detached house in the private Killeen Heights Estate just over a year before the fatal fire.

They were awaiting the completion of the Mitchels Boherbue regeneration project in the town centre which was being developed by Tralee Town Council.

Little Nadine, who was described as a happy child, attended the local Gael Scoil and had just learned to cycle her pink bicycle.

Gardai in Tralee began an investigation into the cause of the fatal fire and treated the incident as suspicious.

An incident room was set up in the local Garda Station and extensive forensic examinations of the scene took place at the time.

A garda spokesperson said this morning: “Gardai investigating a fatal fire that occurred at a property on Killeen Heights, Tralee, County Kerry on 12th May 2012 have arrested three people.

“A man in his 30s was arrested in June 2022. He has since been released without charge with a file being prepare for the DPP.

“A further two men, (both in their 40s) were arrested this morning, Thursday 1st September 2022.

“Both are currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Tralee and Killarney Garda Stations.

“Investigations are ongoing”.
