Paranoia sweeps through Kinahan cartel as cops probe of dirty cash network identifies other companies used by Morrissey

PARANOIA has once again swept through the ranks of Ireland’s most dangerous drugs and crime mob as gangland banker Johnny Morrissey continues to be quizzed over his involvement in a €200m money-laundering scheme.

It is now believed Morrissey — nicknamed ‘Johnny Cash’ — used his contacts in Iran and Pakistan to launder cash for the Kinahan cartel.

And The Irish Sun on Sunday can reveal how the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau — along with their international partners — have identified other companies that Morrissey, 62, is suspected of establishing to wash dirty money.

Investigators also remain hopeful of identifying records of his transactions with cartel associates, major crime gangs and bogus shell companies he established before his arrest.

It is believed the Cartel’s members are in a quandary after Morrissey’s arrest, and high-level thugs associated with the ruthless drugs mob have been put into a state of panic, wondering what details about their activities the cops now possess.

Following the latest move against Daniel Kinahan’s “toxic” mob, detectives are now forensically examining hundreds of documents and the electronic devices seized from Morrissey’s luxury pad in the Costa del Sol.

GANGSTER’S PARADISE

They are hoping to add this material to the information they have already seized since $5million bounties were placed on the head of the Kinahan clan’s three leaders.

One investigator said: “Morrissey was helping the Kinahan Organised Crime Group move cash through countries such as Pakistan and Iran.

“These countries were specifically selected because it’s harder for law enforcement in Europe and the US to operate in those places.

“One of his companies has already been identified as a front but there are others that are the focus of investigation.

“He was moving so much money that he had to keep a record of it and investigators are confident of unravelling his extensive money laundering network.”

And as part of our revelations on the cartel banker, we can also reveal how Morrissey was in partnership with Moroccan crime boss Naoufal ‘The Belly’ Fassih, 42.

The pair are also suspected of working with Hezbollah and other terrorist groups to channel cash in the Middle East.

But Fassih’s partnership with Morrissey ended in April 2016 when he was arrested in a Kinahan safe house in Dublin’s Baggot Street.

EQUAL PARTNERSHIP IN MONEY LAUNDERING

He’s currently serving an 18-year jail sentence in Holland after he was linked to the attempted murder of a rival.

Both Fassih and Morrissey shared an “equal partnership” in the cartel’s money laundering operations.

Following Fassih’s arrest by gardai under Operation Thistle, which was led by Assistant Commissioner Paul Cleary from the Gardai’s Serious and Organised Crime division, Morrissey was given more responsibility to launder cash.

Although Spanish cops believe he had laundered more than €200m over the last 18 months on behalf of Daniel Kinahan, he’s also suspected of laundering hundreds of millions for Colombian narco terrorists, Mexican drug lords and the UK’s major drugs gangs.

LINKS TO ‘VIOLENT’ GANGS ACROSS GLOBE

Another investigator told us: “Morrissey was running an extensive money laundering network and had links to some of the most violent gangs in the globe.”

This week’s latest strike against the crisis-hit cartel was welcomed by Assistant Garda Commissioner Paul Cleary, from the Gardai’s Serious and Organised Crime group.

The senior officer said: “The actions that have taken place over the past few days in Spain, highlight the resilience and determination of international law enforcement to combine our resources to disrupt and dismantle criminal networks.

“An Garda Siochana will continue to work closely with all our international partners, targeting transnational organised crime gangs who profit from drug trafficking and impact so negatively on our society and in particular those networks that cause the most harm to our communities here in Ireland.”

And former Garda Assistant Commissioner John O’Driscoll remains convinced the “apex” of the cartel leadership will all face justice.

At present, Daniel Kinahan remains a “person of interest” in three probes here, while his close associate Sean McGovern is wanted over the murder of grandad Noel ‘Duck Egg’ Kirwan in December 2016.

  • Mr O’Driscoll said: “There is a confidence within the law enforcement community that the cooperation they are engaged in will prove successful and will bring about the dismantling of the group and ensuring others will be prosecuted in the future.

The Kinahan Organised Crime Group consists of many people but the fact Morrissey was mentioned by the US Treasury Department shows the significant role he had within this criminal organisation.

“He was also associated with one of the three companies that were the subject of sanctions and last week’s arrest was another significant development in the ongoing investigations.

LIFE OF LUXURY

“Great efforts are being made in building cases and you just don’t know what’s going to happen next as this is a long-term project.”

Our latest revelations come after we showed how Morrissey attempted to portray himself as a legitimate businessman during his time in Spain.

In a series of videos and images posted on social media, he constantly showed off his life of luxury in the Costa del Sol.

And his promotional material also included videos of his Scottish wife Nicola, who remains on bail after her arrest last week by the Spanish authorities at the same time as Irish passport holder Morrissey.

Other videos show him playing golf with pals, enjoying drinking games and shooting a pistol at a firing range as well as showcasing towels and cushions carrying the branding of his company Nero Drinks.

But Morrissey’s decision to work in the shadows for Daniel Kinahan’s ‘La Organizacion’, while presenting himself as a legitimate businessman and friend to celebrities, is now in ruins after his arrest.
