Gangster’s ex-girlfriend: “I lived a Love/Hate lifestyle,it was a terrible mistake.”

Deirdre Moran says she turned her back on crime after being caught transporting a gun for her Sligo drugs lord boyfriend Patrick Irwin

Real life Love/Hate: Deirdre Moran was jailed after gardai found a revolver in her car that she was transporting for Sligo drugs lord Patrick Irwin

A woman who lived a Love/Hate lifestyle and became a gunrunner for a vicious criminal yesterday admitted she made a “terrible mistake”.

Deirdre Moran was jailed after gardai found a revolver in her car but now she has got her life back on track.

She was taking the weapon to her then boyfriend notorious gangster Patrick Irwin when she was nabbed.

The 28-year old was transporting the Smith & Wesson revolver from Dublin to Sligo for Irwin, one of Ireland’s most dangerous criminals.

She admitted she was attracted by the glamour and money involved in hanging out with his gang.

Deirdre Moran now has her sights set on a career in fashion

Speaking on RTE Radio One’s John Murray Show, Moran said: “There’s a lot of money to be made in it. There’s money getting thrown at you.”

But she insisted she now deeply regrets having anything to with the drugs lord who brought pain and misery to his home town of Sligo.

Moran said: “Of course I do, but I don’t regret having my son – he came out of that.

“But I do regret going back around him, back around 2008 because that’s when it all went pear-shaped.

“I got pregnant and had my son in 2003 but it broke off then and we were in and out of each other’s lives for years after that.

“I had gotten on with my life and had many things going on. I do regret going back around him.”

Moran added she still can’t fully explain why she went back to Irwin after they had split but she said Sligo was too small to avoid him.

The mum revealed: “Back then I  was younger. I think I liked the bit of excitement, so maybe I was drawn to it more. Definitely not now, but back then, yeah.”

When asked by Murray if the lifestyle was a “gangland scene”, she said: “It’s not like that when you’re really in it. It’s everyday living.

“But yeah, there would have been excitement that was around him.

“There wouldn’t have been your everyday boring nine-to-five or something like that. I think I liked the bit of excitement in it.

“Maybe the bit of danger – just that it wasn’t the norm.

“Especially living around a town like that, there isn’t much going on so just maybe the bit of danger, I’d say.”

Moran denied she was part of Irwin’s mob although she admitted she knew what they were up to.

She said: “I wasn’t actually active in the gang but I knew them all and would have been around them from time to time.

“I was always in and out, it wasn’t like I was there 24/7. I always had my own life going on with my own family and friends and my job and my son so I wasn’t around it constantly.

“I wasn’t living in it so I could kind of come and go.

“Not that that’s any better, I suppose that made it easier to justify it because I was going in and out from it.”

Moran was nabbed by gardai when she took delivery of a silver revolver from a Dublin criminal gang after a visit to the Liffey Valley shopping centre in 2008.

She was jailed for five years in 2011 but released after serving three years.

The gun was supplied by an outfit once headed by murdered crime lord Eamon “The Don” Dunne.

Irwin, 32, was jailed for seven years in 2011 for having €67,000 worth of cocaine and other offences.

Moran said her mother and family knew she hanging out with the gang but “not the extent” of her involvement with them until she was arrested.

However, she added: “They would have known he wasn’t any good. They never liked him.”

And Moran still maintains she had no idea what the gun she was transporting for Irwin was to be used for.

She said: “I asked no questions, I didn’t even know. Literally someone put it
into my car.

“I knew I was going up collecting, I had an idea it was a gun. I wasn’t actually told because it’s kind of on a need-to-know basis.

“So it was put in under my seat. I didn’t touch it, I didn’t go near it. I had a fair idea what it was.”

Moran added that when she was stopped by gardai her “heart sank” as she realised she was in big trouble.

And she revealed the hardest part of her sentence was being apart from her son Luke who was seven at the time she went to jail. Moran said: “My heart sank and I knew I was in it up to my eyes.

“You just think of my son and my family – I was after letting them all down.

“There was obviously a certain amount of anger [from her family].

“That was actually the most stressful time between getting arrested and sentencing.

“It was the worst time of all, it was worse than being in prison.
