A memorial concert organised by friends of the late Sophie Toscan du Plantier is to take place in west Cork later this month.

The 39-year-old French film producer, who was murdered on 23 December 1996 at her holiday home outside Schull, would have been 65 years old this year had she lived.

The Garda investigation into her murder remains active.

Entitled ‘Remember Me’, the concert will see local artists perform musical and literary pieces she loved as suggested by Ms Toscan du Plantier’s family.

Accordinging to Bill Hogan, one of the organising committee, it will be an opportunity for friends, family and neighbours to come together to show their respect and esteem for the murdered French woman.

“It is a space for healing. It (her murder) is like an open wound, and it will be very good for her family, and the community, to coalesce around the things she loved,” Mr Hogan said.

“The response within the community to the memorial concert has been overwhelming.”

Among those who will attend the evening will be Sophie’s aunt Marie Madeleine Opalka.

It had been hoped to hold the concert on what would have been Ms Toscan du Plantier’s 65th birthday on 27 July, but as it coincided with Calves Week – Schull’s annual week of competitive sailing – it was deferred until later this month.

The not-for-profit concert is to take place in the Harbour View Hotel on 23 September with tickets at €20 available locally.
