MICHEAL Martin has accused Sinn Fein of a “co-ordinated strategy” of suing media outlets to stop talk about the party’s past.

The Taoiseach alleged that Mary Lou McDonald’s party takes the legal cases in a bid to silence political opponents.

He claimed: “Sinn Fein are suing a lot now. They’re suing politicians.

“They’re suing media and I think the agenda there is that they don’t want people talking about what happened to Maria Cahill, they don’t want people talking about their past.

“This is a co-ordinated strategy by Sinn Fein.”

It comes as Martin admitted he was wrong to suggest in the Dail that Sinn Fein had received a copy of an RTE interview with Shane Ross about his new book before the radio segment was scrapped.

Former Transport Minister Ross has written a biography about Sinn Fein leader McDonald without the help of the opposition leader.

On the back of this book, Ross recorded an interview with RTE’s Claire Byrne which has never aired.

Speaking in the Dail this week, Martin claimed that RTE had provided Sinn Fein with an advanced copy of the interview before it was scrapped.

However, both Sinn Fein and RTE claim this never happened with sources in the national broadcaster telling media this week that the interview was pulled because it was “a bit boring”.

McDonald is suing RTE for defamation over a completely separate radio segment which made reference to Sinn Fein’s treatment of Maria Cahill – a woman who was raped by a suspected senior member of the IRA.

The Taoiseach yesterday conceded his comment in the Dail about Sinn Fein receiving an advanced copy of the interview from RTE was wrong.

He said: “I got that wrong in terms of the access. I said that, I said ‘apparently I understand’. It was a very quick interchange with Paul Kehoe who raised it.”

The Irish Sun contacted Sinn Fein for comment about the Taoiseach’s accusation but no reply was forthcoming before publication.
