Tomorrow morning siptu and other unions are holding a press conference in a Dublin hotel.
The theme of this conference is water to be kept in public ownership and a date for our referendum.
This is the same siptu who told workers in cork, Waterford and Galway a few short weeks ago that in their opinion a referendum was not necessary as they had trust in the government’s promise to keep Irish water in public ownership.
While we as workers welcome all support for our call for a referendum on the public ownership of our public water we feel that this is nothing but a window dressing exercise to deflect attention away from protesting water services workers all over the country but we will not be fooled.
Unions have had to be dragged kicking and screaming into supporting workers calls for a referendum and unions now know that workers have huge public support behind us and will keep campaigning for our promised referendum.
Unions gave workers two promises before entering talks with the government and Irish water, one was no agreement would be reached without a publicly announced date for our promised referendum on the public ownership of our water services. The second promise was that workers would be given a vote on any agreement that would be reached, siptu have reneged on both these promises and have turned their backs on its members, we as workers can not and will not accept this dirty deal and will continue to campaign for our vote, we will get our vote and this might mean dragging siptu threw the courts to achieve this.
