Ian Bailey opens up after ‘being assaulted and kicked in the head’ in West Cork

1st December 2022

Ian Bailey has opened up about being allegedly assaulted by two men in Cork on Wednesday night after meeting two women off social media.

Mr Bailey took to TikTok on November 30 to reveal he was ‘attacked, assaulted and kicked in the head a few times’ after going to meet people he met on social media in the Bantry area of Co Cork.

The 64-year-old, who has been a suspect in Sophie Toscan du Plantier’s murder for over 25 years, has garnered more than 3,000 followers and 14,000 likes since joining the video-sharing social media platform earlier this year.

Speaking to Extra.ie, Mr Bailey clarified that he was attacked by two men, not three as he mistakenly said in his initial video.

‘I do a thing on TikTok, I do shoutouts and people approach me on text. Two girls wanted to meet me [after the shoutouts] last night. They drove down from Cork and I met them in a public place. One lad came up to me, pretending to be a fan of mine

‘I’m a bit disabled, I have to use a hazel walking stick, he started grabbing my stick and threw it away. Then another little langer came up and started to assault me. I was off guard and I got laid down. I’m okay. It occurred outside.

‘I’m a little bit achey. The little f***er came at me. I was taken by surprise, but I gave back as much as I could. I closed the door on them, I called An Garda Siochana,’ he said.

After making the call, Gardai and an ambulance attended the scene of the incident and ‘wanted’ to take Mr Bailey to the hospital.

However, he denied the request from emergency services due to his rugby playing past.

Mr Bailey explained: ‘I was like “I used to play rugby, I’ve got mauled on the bottom of rucks”. I’m slightly achey, I’m okay.

Gardai confirmed in a statement to Extra.ie that they are conducting enquiries into the alleged incident.

They said: ‘Gardaí are conducting enquiries into the alleged assault of a man in the Bantry area of Co Cork at approximately 11:30pm, 30th November 2022.’
