STATE witness Jonathan Dowdall was “awfully convincing” telling Joe Duffy’s Liveline show he had never been involved in crime, the Special Criminal Court has heard.

The ex-Sinn Fein councillor appeared on the RTE radio show on March 11, 2016 — two days after his home was raided by gardai investigating David Byrne’s murder at Dublin’s Regency Hotel.

Officers searched his home for firearms and explosives, suspecting him of membership of the IRA.

The Liveline phone call also took place four days after he had travelled to Northern Ireland with Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch.

In the show recording played to the court, he told the renowned broadcaster: “It’s a complete shock. I don’t know what it’s in relation to.

“About 10 or 15 guards armed to the teeth came in. I’ve never seen guns like that in me life. There was a garda with a machine gun sitting on the sofa watching telly when my wife called back.”

The 44-year-old also told Joe: “I do know the Hutch family, some I’m very proud to know and some I don’t know. I’m friends with Patsy since I was a child.”

Joe also asked him about the seizure of three AK47s that were “suspected” at the time of being used in the Regency attack.

Dowdall told him: “They have nothing to do with me or the search of my home. The media also said it was related to the Kinahans.

“I’ve never met any of the Kinahans. I’m going to lose my company over this, I can’t send my daughter to school. There’s no proof or foundation to this.”

After listening to the clip, Hutch’s lawyer Brendan Grehan SC described the witness as “awfully convincing”.

Dowdall answered: “Everything I said there was true. I wasn’t involved in the Regency Hotel.”

Mr Grehan said: “You’re on here telling the nation you’re a victim?”

The witness said: “I wasn’t a criminal. I know I’m classed as a criminal over what happened to (torture victim) Alex Hurley. I was never involved in criminality in the sense of making ill-gotten gains.”

Mr Grehan added: “You thought you could ride it out by going on Joe Duffy and claiming you were the indignant victim of a plot against you?”

Dowdall replied: “That’s what you think.”

REGENCY ROOM CARDS

Dowdall has told the court he and his father handed over key cards to Hutch for the Regency room booked the night before the murder.

He also said The Monk had met him in a Dublin park and admitted to shooting Byrne. But Mr Grehan said the only thing to support Dowdall’s claims was his “say-so”.

He replied: “One hundred per cent it was Gerard Hutch who took those keys. If it was Patsy I’d say it was Patsy. Why would I say it was someone it wasn’t?”

Mr Grehan said he could think of loads of reasons.

He told the court: “Your business was effectively over and you knew if the contents of those audios were put into the public domain you would never be able to live safely in this country again?”

Dowdall: “That’s not it. I will always be able to rebuild my life.”

Counsel also questioned the validity of his claim that he met Hutch in a Whitehall park between 11am and noon on or about February 8, the day his brother Eddie was murdered.

Mr Grehan said a report by a mobile phone analyst will show his phone was at his home just before noon on February 8 and was heading up the M1 near Dundalk at 1pm an hour later.

He did say it was triangulated on Collins Avenue near Whitehall at 15.16pm on February 7.

Dowdall replied: “So it wasn’t on the 8th. I always said I wasn’t sure, I just knew it was after the Sunday World article came out on the 7th.

“It was seven years ago. I got the times wrong, I always thought it was the morning time but I had a lot going on at the time.”

Mr Grehan concluded his cross-examination by saying: “So first you get the days wrong and now the times are wrong. You tell lies and lies, do you accept that?”

Dowdall said: “I wasn’t involved in David Byrne’s murder, he took those key cards and he said he shot the kid. That’s 100 per cent fact.”

The State witness then left the jury box after eight days giving evidence. Prosecutor Sean Gillane SC said he had a few things to tidy up after Christmas before the prosecution case ends.

Hutch, 59, has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Byrne at the Regency Hotel on February 5, 2016.

His co-accused Paul Murphy and Jason Bonney have pleaded not guilty to related charges. The trial is adjourned to January 11, 2023.
