Dublin mum shot in front of daughter determined to fight back

 1st January 2023

In 2020 Sinéad Connolly was shot three times in her home in Bluebell, Dublin. Her daughter Leah who was just about to turn eight watched as her mother fell to the ground.

Sinéad would go on to spend over two months in the Mater, St James’s Hospital and would later relocate to the National Rehabilitation Centre in Dun Laoghaire.

The mum of one has since spoken about the life-changing event which has left her in a wheelchair but she is determined not to let this stop her.

She now wants to train to become a counsellor and help others, refusing to allow those who shot her, to destroy the rest of her life.

Speaking to the Irish Sunday Mirror about the horrific event she said that life has completely changed not only for her but for her daughter as well.

She spoke of how she ‘used to walk everywhere and do all the things a mother does for her child and I can’t do any of that now. I have missed out on making special memories with her.’

Currently residing at St. James’s hospital until her home is adapted to her needs, Sinead will have to undergo more procedures in the future.

She will have to have a Baclofen Pump and a Mitrofanoff tube inserted to stop the body from going into spasm as well as giving her the freedom to use the bathroom on her own, without assistance.

However, Sinead is in no way going to back down and let those who shot her ruin her life.

While she is still angry with them over what happened she is now challenging that into something productive and taking back control of her life.

‘I want to train to be a counsellor and go back and work at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire, she says.

But most of all she wants to do this for her daughter, Leah. The mother of one stated how she is ‘not a victim…I’m a survivor and I will go on and have a life with my little girl.’

Three men have since been jailed. Dean McCarthy from Bluebell received 15 years. He pleaded guilty to attempted murder. Joseph Byrne of La Touche Road, Bluebell got nine-and-a- half years. This was for the possession of a handgun and also with the intent to endanger life.

Finally, in December 2022 Paul Mooney at the address of Ring Street in Inchicore was given five years for trying to get rid of the weapon used in the attack.

Sinéad, while glad to see her attackers behind bars, she doesn’t believe their sentences are long enough. While they will be released in years to come, she says ‘I have to live like this for the rest of my life.’
