Two evictions from Council housing despite €40 million rent owed and anti-social behaviour. Source: Dublinlive. Fred says add to this 5,000 voids ie empty properties held in trust by the local councils. What does this say other than silos, no communication, homelessness at crisis levels and why? Too much bureaucracy and a dose of laziness.

Dublin City Council evicted two households last year despite almost €40 million owed in rent arrears and wide-spread anti-social behaviour, such as drug dealing.

The figures, which were obtained by Dublin Live, show one eviction was due to “rent arrears” while the other was because of “drug related” illegal occupier. More than €38 million is owed by 8,050 tenants.

And 51 tenants owe more than €27,000 each, while a further 136 owe between €19,000 and €27,000. Another 589 households have rent arrears of between €11,000 and €19,000.

Independent Councillor Noeleen Reilly told Dublin Live there are “huge” problems with anti-social behaviour in Council housing which is not being dealt with. She said: “We are letting people do whatever they want – carry on with criminal activity, deal drugs and cause issues in their area.

“Yet, no one is being evicted for it. I think that sends out a really bad message to people that you can do whatever you want in DCC properties and you are going to get away with it.

She added: “In 2016, the new housing act was supposed to change things and give the councils power to actually evict people but, as you can see from the figures, that is just not happening.”

The BallymunFinglas representative added that DCC should never let arrears reach the amounts that some tenants owe. She said: “There are all sorts of reasons why people are in arrears.

“Some have very substantial arrears but Dublin City Council should never let it get to a point where people are building up huge amounts of arrears. There has been a lot of press around the €40 million that is owed and I think the City Council have started to take people to court in terms of their arrears.

“I’m not in the business of evicting people but people have a responsibility to ensure that they are not abusing their tenancy agreement.”

She added:

“That sends out the message that you don’t have to pay your rent because you will get away with it.”
