Probe launched after inmate found dead at Castlerea Prison

An investigation has been launched into the death of a young inmate in Castlerea Prison in Co Roscommon.

The prisoner, who is reported to have been in his 20s and from Co Donegal, was found dead in the medium security prison where he was on remand.

The Irish Prison Service has confirmed that the man’s family have been notified of his death, and an investigation has been launched. The coroner is to determine the cause of death.

‘The Irish Prison Service can confirm that there was a death in custody of a person in the custody of the Irish Prison Service on 26^th January 2023 and the next of kin have been notified,’ a statement from Irish Prison Services told Extra.ie.

‘This death in custody will be investigated by the Irish Prison Service, The Inspector of Prisons and An Garda Síochána, where circumstances warrant. The cause of death is determined by the Coroner’s Office.’
