Gardai are investigating one of Ireland’s best known sport stars over claims of an alleged €1million fraud.

It is understood the GAA household name is alleged to have taken money from various individuals under false pretences.

The cash was supposed to be used to pay for various trips abroad so he could receive medical treatment for an alleged serious illness. Now doubts are being cast on whether he was actually ill.

A number of people have made complaints to gardai that he used the money for his own personal use.

One businessman from Co Laois reportedly gave him a donation of €120,000.

Another individual who played on the same team as him reportedly gave him €15,000.

One GAA legend said the star approached him for cash but he turned him down.

He said: “A lot of people gave him substantial funds and now they believe they were conned. They are all very angry and believe they will never get a penny back.

“They feel absolutely devastated and betrayed.”

Gardai confirmed that officers in the Eastern region had begun a major investigation into the individual.

A spokesman said the sums involved were “substantial”.

Another source said the figure involved was at least €1million quid.

He said: “This scam is truly awful. A lot of decent people have been stung. The individual involved has some neck and has destroyed lifelong friendships.”
