Gardaí arrested as part of probe into alleged extortion of food delivery workers
A number of Gardaí have been arrested.
An Garda Síochána has confirmed that a number of gardaí have been arrested as part of an investigation into the alleged extortion of food delivery workers.
The Irish Times reports that the arrests came after the launch of a probe in 2021 by the Garda Anti-Corruption Unit. This is into allegations that Deliveroo and other food delivery riders were being stopped and “taxed” as they worked by a group of gardaí
“This investigation remains ongoing. A number of members of An Garda Síochána have been arrested and detained for questioning as part of this investigation, to date.
“An Garda Síochána does not comment in detail on ongoing investigations.
“An Garda Síochána has previously confirmed that four members of An Garda Síochána are suspended from duty as part of an investigation into certain matters in north Dublin City Centre.
“An Garda Síochána does not comment on internal matters.
The outlet states that food delivery riders were allegedly forced to hand over sums of money, usually around €50 or less, in order to be permitted to continue to work. It also says that four Dublin-based gardaí have been suspended throughout the probe and that a number of those have now been arrested.
