Violent thug who battered woman over drugs stash branded a ‘Walter Mitty character’ behind bars over gangster delusions

A VIOLENT drug addict who battered a woman in a savage attack has been branded a “Walter Mitty character” behind bars due to his gangster delusions.
Evil Jonathan Whelan, 48, was caged for eight and half years at Dublin Circuit Court last month after he threatened to “finish off” his neighbour during a terrifying attack.
The barbaric assault – which was filmed by Whelan – took place at his flat in Lower Great Charles Street area of the north inner city on April 4, 2021.
He targeted the innocent woman after wrongly accusing her of stealing his cannabis.
While in custody, the thug boasted of his gangland links and how he would get enemies “sorted”.
One source told us: “He thinks he’s very intelligent but the reality is very different.
“Whelan thought he was a big time gangster but he had absolutely no connections and he’s just extremely paranoid.
“He was doing a bit of street level dealing, selling pills and what now. But that’s it.
“He was going around telling people he would get them sorted, when in fact he was nothing but a Walter Mitty character.
However, when officers probed his background, they found he had no links to organised crime and was instead just a low lever street dealer.
