When the then president-elect Joe Biden was door stepped by the BBC for an interview, his response — “The BBC? I’m Irish” — caused annoyance in the UK, and some eye-rolls in Ireland.

His claim on Thursday that addressing the Houses of the Oireachtas was one of the greatest honours of his life was probably sincere, but only cued more eye-rolling from the cynics.
