Man (41) arrested after 24-year-old dies following assault in Dublin city hostel

A man (41) has been arrested as gardaí investigate a fatal assault at a hostel in Dublin city in the early hours of this morning.
Gardaí responded to reports of an assault on Harrington Street in Dublin 2 at around 4.45am.
A 24-year-old man was found with serious injuries and was rushed to St James’ Hospital where he later died.
Gardaí sealed off the hostel as the forensic examination into the killing began.
It is understood that the victim suffered a number of stab wounds.
The 24-year-old victim is originally form the Rathfarnham area of south Dublin.
The 41-year-old man who is in custody in relation to this morning’s murder is an Irish national and is understood to be a resident of the hostel where the stabbing occurred.
A window on the top floor of the hostel could be seen to be broken but it was unclear in the early stages of the investigation if that was connected to the attack early this morning.
Gardaí took details of people entering and leaving the hostel.
“The office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a post-mortem examination will take place later today,” a garda spokesperson said.
“A man, aged in his 40s, has been arrested by gardaí. He is currently being detained at a garda station in Dublin under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
