Gardaí in Dundalk have launched a murder investigation after the body of a woman was discovered on Wednesday evening. 

The woman, 62, was found lying face down at her home on Bridge Street in Dundalk town after suffering blunt force trauma.

An autopsy has since been completed. While gardaí will not reveal details of the findings for operational reasons, they have launched a murder investigation. 

The scene remains preserved and the technical examination is ongoing. 

It is understood gardaí have spoken to a person of interest in the case.

Gardaí also made door-to-door inquiries in the area around the property where the discovery was made.

Local priest Fr Michael Maher told the Irish Examiner: “We have heard the news and it is deeply shocking. There is too much violence now.”

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses and particularly anyone who was in the vicinity of Bridge Street on Wednesday afternoon/evening to contact Dundalk Garda Station 042 938 8400, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
