The poster of the video wrote: ‘On the bus back from Palestine March in Dublin. Bus driver asked: “Were youse with the protest?” and then let everyone for free.’
Following complaints about the video made to Dublin Bus on social media, it responded and said an investigation was underway into the incident.
A spokesperson wrote: ‘This matter is currently being investigated by the relevant department, thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.’© Provided by Extra.ie The video, which was shared on Twitter, showed a bus service after a rally to support Palestine and protest against Israel for its part in their ongoing conflict. Extra.ie has contacted Dublin Bus for clarification as to whether the investigation is focussed on admission to the service for free, or on the number of people on the bus.
The current guidance on the Dublin Bus website reads: ‘From 10 May 2021, capacity on public transport will increase from 25% of normal capacity to 50% under new public health measures announced by the Government.© Provided by Extra.ie Those on the bus appeared to be standing in close contact as they chanted: “Free, free Palestine”, and waved Palestinian flags. ‘As our services are likely to be busier than at any time since the beginning of the pandemic we ask customers to avoid travelling at peak times when school children and essential workers are using public transport. We advise customers to plan their journey in advance and allow additional time.’
As Dublin Bus service capacity has increased in line with Government guidance, it remains unclear as to whether the numbers on the service in question were above the current 50% capacity allowed.
