The Court of Appeal has ruled that a fourth trial of Michael Shine, a retired consultant surgeon in prison for indecent assault, cannot go ahead because of a two-year delay by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in informing him of the charges.
Shine, 88, was due to stand trial for 31 alleged indecent assaults on 11 former patients from 1968 to 1992. He is serving a four-year prison sentence following his conviction in February 2019 on 12 counts of indecent assault and one of sexual assault of seven people.
That conviction followed a 20-month sentence in November 2017 when the former consultant at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda was found guilty of indecently and sexually assaulting two other former boys?
