In order to talk about mental health/wellbeing, we need to first deal with mental illness, it’s very core, the inability of a Government to fund services. We have a major shortage of psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses and no doubt carers too. If I am correct there are only 3 beds in South Dublin for people with anorexia. Institutionalised was a real problem in Ireland in the last century but then there was change – a so called “Vision for Change” early 2000. There has been no vision. Mental illness has people living in hostels especially run for them, but then there are the homeless, the people in homeless hostels. The Neglect of people with mental illness is a most shocking indictment and I ask an Taoiseach, having shown his disgust at the treatment in CAMHS in Kerry to place mental illness at the core of the HSE plans going forward. I await Morley/McGinley (3 beautiful children dead because of mental illness) decision. Murder suicide blights our country too. Post Pandemic Stress disorder will be significant because of COVID-19. This second pandemic mental illness relates to public health also. Please tackle it with the same energy and commitment as COVID-19, the people deserve this. Psychiatric Cinderella is so shunned; sometimes I wish we had people of calibre like Jonathan Swift founder of St. Patrick’s hospital by bequest of funds or Anthony Clare, In the Psychiatrists Chair…he opened it up and took away shame as people like Spike Milligan revealed the horrors they experienced from mental illness but what they did do is that they showed us the Good and the Bad experiences people can have; there was hope in their abilities …
