Drunk student called gardaí and tried to get into their car

A DRUNKEN student who became “extremely aggressive” to gardaí and tried to get into their patrol car had called them because he thought he had been drugged at a party.

Angel Fiedel (20) had never drunk heavily before but “overdid it due to peer pressure” then panicked when he blacked out.

Judge Bryan Smyth struck the case out, sparing him a criminal record after he donated €250 to charity.

Mr Fiedel, of Dún Saithne Road, Balbriggan, pleaded guilty to garda obstruction and public intoxication.

Dublin District Court heard gardaí found the accused in a highly intoxicated state at Hamilton Way, Ashtown, Cabra last November 1 after being called to the scene.

When they spoke to him, Mr Fiedel became extremely aggressive and attempted to enter the patrol vehicle. When asked to desist, the behaviour continued and he had to be restrained and arrested.

Mr Fiedel had called the gardaí himself, highly distressed and afraid that he had possibly been drugged, his lawyer said.

The prosecuting garda said the distressed caller was anonymous.

Mr Fiedel had apologised profusely and had no previous convictions. He had been at a party and it was his first time drinking heavily as he had just turned 18 at the start of the pandemic, his lawyer said.

The next morning, he could not believe his actions.

Mr Fiedel was in the second year of an economics degree in university and wanted to do a masters in Canada, his lawyer said.
