One of Hungary’s most wanted criminals has been arrested in Dublin with his wife and is now facing extradition, it can be revealed.

Hungarian police had been searching for the 36-year-old man, who appears on a list of their top 50 most wanted criminals, and his wife, for fraudulently extorting money as part of a criminal organisation.

According to local media reports, he had managed to evade capture in Hungary and fled, prompting Budapest Police Headquarters to issue a international and European-wide arrest warrant.

“The Hungarian branch of KR NNI (Police National Investigation Bureau) head-hunters worked together with the authorities of the United Kingdom to locate the two wanted criminals,” Hungarian media reported.

“Upon locating them in Belfast, the authorities launched a raid on February 7. However, the couple managed to escape the law once again.

“Thanks to the tireless work of the head-hunters, they managed to find out that the couple fled to Ireland. The Hungarian KR NNI contacted the Irish authorities through ENFAST (European Network Fugitive Active Search Teams).

“Finally, the Irish police caught them in Dublin on February 18, at night. Their extradition will be decided by the Irish authorities later.”

According to the news website, Telex, the 36-year-old had been engaged in illegal activities along with wife, also 36, whereby they tried to extort money from elderly people by posing as their grandchildren.

“The emotionally manipulated and concerned grandparents would fall for the trick and give the money to the criminals in order to help their grandchildren, who they probably have very little contact with.”

“They call the elderly grandparents and tell them that their grandchildren have suffered an accident or were stuck in a foreign country, and need money to make it home safely,” Telex reports.

Gardai have confirmed the arrests, stating that they were carried out “in the course of ongoing proactive collaboration with European colleagues”.

“Personnel assigned to the Extradition Unit within the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (GNBCI) arrested two individuals on Friday, February 18, on foot of a number of Extradition Warrants that had issued in relation to crimes of extortion which are suspected to have been committed in Hungary and Poland,” gardai said.

“The two individuals, a male and a female, both aged 36 were brought before the High Court on Saturday, February 19 and are currently remanded in custody.”
