Former Dragons’ Den star Sarah Newman made a statement to gardaí about convicted swindler Catriona Carey 10 years ago — over concerns she had about the collapse of a company she ran with her then partner, Kilkenny hurling legend DJ Carey.

The Sunday Independent understands that Ms Newman reported her concerns to gardaí in Blackrock, Co Dublin, in 2011 over “major accounting issues and discrepancies” that came to light as she tried to take her money out of the business, DJ Carey Enterprises.

Catriona Carey passed herself off as a high-flying international financier with a €1bn budget to help distressed mortgage holders.

The accountant, who is being investigated in connection with an alleged €500,000 mortgage scam, claimed to have a 10-year background in banking, had worked as a Chief Financial Officer in the Middle East and Europe and claimed to “specialise in corporate and bond markets”.

A couple who handed over €10,000 to businesswoman Catriona Carey have claimed she assured them last week they would get contracts for a new mortgage once she received a further €20,000.

But the pair said they were “sick to their stomach” when they saw the front page of their local newspaper. They fear they have fallen victim to alleged fraud.
