Sinn Féin deletes thousands of statements from its website due to ‘outdated content’

14th March 2022

SINN Féin has said it deleted thousands of media statements from its website because it is working on a new website and is archiving “outdated content”.

The Sunday Independent reported that thousands of press statements from Sinn Féin politicians going back over 20 years have been deleted in recent days.

These include statements from Sinn Féin spokespersons on Russia and Nato.

Among them was party leader Mary Lou McDonald’s comments in March 2018 describing then Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s decision to expel a Russian diplomat over the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal in Salisbury, England, as “a flagrant disregard for Irish neutrality”.

Responding to queries last night, a Sinn Féin spokesperson said: “We are currently in the process of building a new website and archiving outdated content.”

Fianna Fáil MEP Billy Kelleher said Sinn Féin’s decision to remove thousands of media statements shows that its position on “major issues have always been wrong”.

“Even they’re embarrassed by them,” he said.

Following the Russian invastion of Ukraine on February 24, Sinn Féin is currently facing criticisms for its position throughout the years on Russia and Nato.

In the statement on March 27, 2018, Ms McDonald demanded to see evidence underpinning the decision to expel the Russian diplomat.

“In this case, a decision has been based on information from a foreign security intelligence service, which is an unprecedented step. Essentially, we are being asked to trust Boris Johnson.

“Dare I say that this might not be the best course of action?” she said.

Another statement that has been removed from the site is one from former presidential candidate Liadh Ní Riada who, as an MEP in June 2017, welcomed EU backing for the Shannon Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal.

She described it as “hugely important to the North Kerry and West Limerick region”.

Sinn Féin now opposes this project.

Another statement which has been deleted from the Sinn Féin website is from its former foreign affairs spokesperson Seán Crowe supporting the abolition of Nato in 2014.

The Dublin South-West TD had said the military alliance was “nothing more than a Cold War relic that needs to be disbanded”.

Fred Bassett /// there has been no takeover in Ireland : why are Sinn Fein acting as conquerors who have the privilege of re-writing history; we lost the documents in 1921 Customs House burning but surely now we have a system that can be archived and left for the historians to report on. Shame on Sinn Fein to think they could basically just delete the files that created the fibs they now want to have no part off. How one-sided?
