

Barristers paid 40 times normal fee to prosecute white-collar cases

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) paid some barristers more than 40 times the normal circuit court rate for prosecuting high profile white-collar crime cases, documents released under freedom of information show.
The DPP has fought a five-year legal battle to prevent details of the increased fees it paid prosecuting counsel from being released under freedom of information legislation but last December Judge Garrett Simons said the records should be released.
The records, covering 25 cases from 2013 to 2017, show the highest brief fees of €50,000 given to lawyers to take on two cases involving Anglo Irish Bank executives.
