Ukraine, do not forget your warrior women; every conflict has them. This woman fought for Ireland; she went on hunger strike; she like many others served their time in Kilmainham Gaol Dublin (now a tourist attraction).

99 years ago, the most feisty and fascinating women in Ireland were gathered in one place – Kilmainham Gaoi.  Among them was a native of Newmarket, Nan Hogan, who was born on a farm which now lies under tarmac at Shannon airport.  During the War of Independence she was fearless.

1916 was the year of the Irish Rising against the British Empire.
