The Fianna Fáil think-in went on late into the night yesterday, as the party had an “honest” but “tense at times” discussion about the party’s 2020 general election performance, according to one senior party source.

It is also understood that Micheál Martin, the taoiseach, was phoning TDs whose names were on the list of 15 potential rebels published by The Times this week to see if they were surprised that they were on the list.

A number of them have now come out to distance themselves from the catalogue of potential rebel TDs.

The 15 names are Jim O’Callaghan, Barry Cowen, Dara Calleary, John Lahart, Michael Moynihan, Marc MacSharry, Éamon Ó Cuív, Willie O’Dea, Joe Flaherty, Padraig O’Sullivan, James O’Connor, Jackie Cahill, John McGuinness,
