A female teacher out walking her dogs was confronted by a knife-wielding man in Cork.
Gardaí arrested a middle-aged man after the incident in Skibbereen in west Cork which left the woman badly shaken.
The man, believed to be in his 40s, was detained for questioning under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act after the alarm was raised by the woman.
The incident, which is understood to have occurred after 6pm, ended when the man fled the scene after the woman’s dogs apparently reacted aggressively to defend her.
He brandished a knife when he confronted the woman as she walked with her dogs along a route popular with both walkers and cyclists.
When the man fled the scene, she was able to raise the alarm using her mobile phone.
Gardaí were at the scene within minutes and the arrest was made a short time later.
It is unclear whether the incident was an attempted robbery.
Initial indications are that the woman was also assisted by locals who realised something was wrong.
The woman was not injured during the incident but was said to be deeply shocked by what happened.
