Learner driver on road for just two weeks arrested after high speed pursuit

9th April 2022

A Learner driver that was on the road for only two weeks was caught by Gardaí going over 50km/hr over the speed limit.

The roads policing unit caught the speeder going 172km/hr on the M7 motorway — a staggering 52km/hr over the 120km/hr speed limit.

After pursuing the speeding driver, Gardaí discovered that the driver was an unaccompanied learner — who are not allowed on the motorway even if accompanied.a man wearing a hat: A Learner driver that was on the road for only two weeks was caught by Gardaí going over 50km/hr over the speed limit. On top of smashing the limit and driving on the motorway as a learner, the driver had only received their learner’s permit two weeks earlier, and had no L plates or insurance on their car when they were stopped by Gardaí.

‘Laois Roads Policing Unit detected a vehicle travelling at 172kph on the M7 this evening [Friday],’ Gardaí said in a statement. ‘The driver was driving on a learner permit only issued two weeks ago and was driving while unaccompanied, without L plates displayed and without insurance.’

The driver was arrested and is due to appear before Portlaoise District Court, and their vehicle has been seized by Gardaí.
