A young man who hid cannabis in his underwear started selling the drug to a small group of people after he began smoking it, a court heard.
Yonas Weakliam (21) was fined €250 by Judge Máire Conneely who also imposed a four-month sentence, suspended for nine months.
The defendant, of Cardy Rock Crescent in Balbriggan, admitted possession of cannabis for sale or supply.
Garda Eoin O’Connor told Swords District Court he obtained a warrant and searched a property at Bath Road, Balbriggan on September 21, 2019.
Weakliam was present at the time, and he tried to flee into the rear garden. He was arrested and taken to Balbriggan garda station, where he was searched, and found with €360 worth of cannabis hidden in his underwear.
Weakliam also had two mobile phones and €120 cash.
Defence solicitor Fiona D’Arcy said Weakliam was dabbling in cannabis at the time, and providing the drug to a small group of people.
He was not selling it on the streets. Asking the judge to be lenient, Ms D’Arcy said Weakliam was now working in computers and was no longer smoking cannabis.
