Mick Wallace accuses Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael of ‘promoting and loving’ the war in Ukraine

 7th October 2022

MEP Mick Wallace has launched a scathing attack on Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, accusing them of “loving” and “promoting” the war in Ukraine.

Mr Wallace said two of Ireland’s governing parties are supporting the “US-NATO proxy war” in Ukraine and even accused them of “loving and promoting” it. He also said many “among Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil had “lost the plot”.

Mr Wallace said there was no effort from the EU to bring about an end to the war and said two Irish parties are “loving” that the conflict is continuing.

“Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have been promoting this war, and are loving this war. They’re supporting a US-NATO proxy war. This war is being fought on behalf of NATO.

“This war is a disaster for the people of Ukraine and is going to drive up the cost of living for everyone across Europe. And we’re doing this on behalf of the US and NATO? The Americans are making idiots of us,” Mr Wallace said on South East Radio this morning.

The Wexford MEP also accused the EU of being “a puppet of the Americans and being so god damned weak and leaderless”. He said the claims that he was pro-Russian and anti-Ukrainian were “rubbish”.

“I’m not pro-anybody. I don’t like any government. There’s not one government in the world today that I like,” Mr Wallace said, adding that politics was a “huge disappointment” to him.

The MEP said that “he’s never said a good word about Putin” and branded him a “right-wing neo-liberal nationalist”.

“Truth be told, he stole the election last year from the Communists, who I’d have liked to have seen winning it,” he said.

Mr Wallace said that EU states that don’t want to “take sides in the war are being bullied into doing so” by recent European Parliament resolutions and said the EU is “afraid the war will end”.

“It says that hesitation from those who support Ukraine only prolongs the war. Hesitation? This is mad stuff. These guys are losing the plot. Saying we should unconditionally support Ukraine..I mean, you shouldn’t unconditionally support anybody. That means no matter what Ukraine does – even if they were killing their own people – we’ve to support them, sure that’s nonsense.

  • “These people are afraid the war will end, they want the war to continue. Putting Leopold tanks in there is guaranteed to keep the war going.

Mr Wallace also rubbished calls for an embargo on buying Russian goods, metals and fossil fuels by saying that nobody called for an embargo on US goods when “US-NATO bombings” were occurring in Afghanistan.

“Did anyone call for a ban on American goods or a ban on American athletes participating at that time?

“They’re going to drive up the cost of living for everyone in Europe [through goods and metals embargo on Russia], and for what,” Mr Wallace said.

An amendment to a recent European Parliament resolution condemning Russia was put forward by MEPs Wallace and Clare Daly, of which the vast majority voted against.

“The amendment called to explore all potential avenues for peace and to pursue efforts to bring about an immediate end to the war. 436, the vast majority of MEPs, voted against it. The vast majority rather war to peace,” Mr Wallace said.

The Wexford MEP also claimed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has “also threatened nuclear strikes”. Zelensky’s office clarified statements from the president that when calling for “pre-emptive strikes” on Russia, he meant sanctions before the war began to prevent Russia from ever using nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

“Why is there no effort from the EU for peace? There’s atrocities happening on both sides and we don’t know what exactly is happening but we have Irish and European media accepting Ukraine’s side of the story – both sides tell lies in war

“We’ve condemned the Russian aggression in Ukraine many times and we are still condemning it. When Russia invaded Ukraine we made it clear that it was a breach of the UN charter, which we completely disagree with, and it is illegal.

“We voted against the resolution because it maintains a whole lot of stuff that we didn’t agree with, for example, it calls on all member states to massively increase their military assistance – we don’t believe that pouring more weapons into Ukraine is a good idea. We think more Ukrainians will die and it will have a terrible impact on an awful lot of people,” Mr Wallace said.
