Ireland has always had links to the Crimea.  Sir William Russell ( ‘the first and greatest of war correspondents’).  It is interesting to note his Irish links, connections and that he lived in 40 Upper Baggot Street, Dublin 4.

“There is a common misconception that Russell was responsible for Florence Nightingale’s medical mission at Scutari. It is true that he often described the plight of the sick and wounded and the almost total lack of medical services in Balaclava, but it was Thomas Chenery, The Times correspondent in Constantinople, who went to Scutari and wrote of the dreadful hospital conditions, resulting in Nightingale’s mission.”

When Sir William lived in Upper Baggot Street the remarkable Royal City of Dublin hospital trained doctors and nurses for the Crimean war, and of course there were the Mercy nuns, who have a large building on Lower Baggot St, Dublin 2.  It is probable that he had some impetus in getting proper care for the wounded soldiers.

Tsar Nicholas I once stated: ‘We have no need of spies; we have The Times.’

Since Putin’s invasion of Ukraine 24th February 2022 (but he started the dissent and invasion of regions in 2014), Ireland has provided accommodation, services, funding for people forced to flee Ukraine.  This is not an easy task for a small country with a homeless crisis and a considerable number of people looking for homes through social housing provision.  Ireland has not shrunk from its responsibilities of contribution.  Other countries have sought to join NATO but Ireland’s provision for the Ukrainians puts them on par with countries seeking membership of NATO.  Peacekeeping and providing accommodation and support is our contribution.
