Elderly man assaulted as four imprisoned during south Dublin house burglary

An elderly man was assaulted and in among four people held against their will during a burglary in Monkstown earlier today.

The terrifying incident happened just after 8am this morning when a number of men who were dressed as workers forced their way into the house on Carrickbrennan Lawn. There they falsely imprisoned the four occupants and assaulted the man in his 70s.

A number of items were stolen during the burglary and the men escaped on foot. They were spotted going in the direction of Monkstown village.

Gardai have now issued an appeal for witnesses. That includes anyone who may have video or dashcam footage in or around Carrickbrennan Lawn and Monkstown village between 7.30 and 9amA garda spokeswoman said: “At approximately 8.15am this morning a number of men, dressed as workers, knocked on the door of a residential property on Carrickbrennan Lawn. The men forced their way into the house and held the four occupants against their will. A man, aged in his 70s was assaulted during the incident. He was transferred to St Vincent’s University Hospital for treatment. His injuries are non-life threatening.

“The men, who took a number of items in the course of the burglary, subsequently left the scene on foot in the direction of Monkstown village. Gardaí in Dún Laoghaire are appealing to any person who may have witnessed this incident to contact them.

“Any persons or road users who were in or around Carrickbrennan Lawn and Monkstown village this morning Monday 21st August between 7.30a.m. and 9:00a.m. and who may have video/dash cam footage is asked to contact investigating Gardaí. Anyone with information is asked to contact Dún Laoghaire Garda Station at 01 666 5000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
